- Must nominate an occupation listed on the Skilled Migration Occupation Lists
- Must have a positive Skilled Assessment assessed by the relevant authority
- Must have at least a Competent English (eg. IELTS at least minimum 6 each bands)
- Must meet the required pass mark for the points test
- Must be invited to apply under the SkillSelect

On average, the processing time takes 15 to 16 months. Circumstances vary on the action done in the Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) visa application as follows:
- The information in the application are not complete
- The supporting documents are not sufficient for the case officer to finalise the application and more document(s)/information are required
- The response time of the applicant for the requested information
- The information provided takes time on the verification process.
- The information from external agencies sometimes takes time. Example, those who are related to national security, health, and character requirements

- Study in Australia
- Work in Australia
- Apply Medicare (Australia's public healthcare scheme)
- May sponsor relatives to visit Australia
- Enjoy travelling to and from Australia for five years
- May apply for Australian citizenship when requirements (eg. residency) are met
- Sponsor de facto partner or spouse to join in Australia permanently
- Sponsor dependent child up below 25 years of age to join in Australia permanently
- Sponsor close relative to migrate in Australia under General Skilled Migration (GSM) program
